 The Neurology of Chiropractic

The spine is very important to the function of the brain. Movement in the spine provides feedback to the brain to tell you where you are in space. By assessing spinal segmental motion, pelvic and hip alignment, posture, and spinal curvature among other things, we gain a functional picture of your spine. We then connect that to a neurological assessment looking at balance and stability, accuracy of movement, head/eye reflexes, and more, followed by treatments to address any deficiencies we see. These may include the chiropractic adjustment, exercises, or other active or passive modalities.

One under-appreciated reason a trained chiropractor will give a chiropractic adjustment, is to provide feedback to the brain from the spine. Because the human brain is ‘sensory driven’, we can only function and respond properly if we have proper input from our receptors. Joints can become "hypomobile" with age, arthritis, and trauma, and consequently we expect to see decreased neural feedback from these joints. The adjustment provides a barrage of proprioceptive feedback to the brain by firing joint mechanoreceptors and muscle spindles, and creating movement through joints. This results in not only better joint feedback and "awareness", but also decreased pain, increased range of motion, and improved function.

Phase 1: Relief Care- Symptom Driven

If you are in pain when you come into our Portsmouth chiropractic office, our first objective is to help you reduce pain and start feeling better as soon as possible. Depending on the severity and duration of the pain or underlying condition which is causing your pain, it is typical for a patient to need treatments 2-3 times per week to start.

Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care- Dysfunction Driven

Once pain has resolved, we will continue to work on any dysfunctions which do not always resolve as quickly as the pain. If the underlying dysfunction remains, the symptoms will return. During the corrective phase of chiropractic care, muscles and other tissues are trained to heal more completely, which helps prevent further injury or pain. The goal of corrective or restorative chiropractic care is to help bring your body back to 100% functioning. It is typical to need chiropractic care or adjustments weekly to monthly in this phase, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed and you are no longer having pain OR dysfunction, it is important to come in for periodic visits to make sure this continues. This is especially true if you have had the problem for a long period of time, or if your job, lifestyle, etc. continue to contribute to the problem. We recommend a regular visit or ‘tune up’ once every 4-6 weeks, based on your lifestyle and goals.
